A striking beard [Oct. 22nd, 2009|10:35 am]

[Current Mood | annoyed]

I favour electric shaving over the traditional kind, because my skin tends to be bad and uneven, and razors leave me looking like I’ve been attacked by something with sharp teeth. My electric shaver broke on Sunday… with a large credit card bill and a trip to South Africa looming, I can ill afford to buy a new one, so I did the sensible thing and searched eBay for a replacement for the part which broke, and ordered it the next day.

(those other two pictures were meant to be of Papa Smurf and Charles Manson, but the links seem to be broken)

That part is stuck somewhere in a Royal Mail post backlog. Along with a pair of sandals, which I ordered from Amazon more than two weeks ago… it’s early summer in Africa right now, am I going to have to go on safari wearing fucking New Rocks? I had to leave work early yesterday so I could go to the sorting office again and ask where that parcel has got to – which is made all the more difficult because the postmen in my area frequently don’t bother to leave collection cards, so when I turn up at their office and ask if they’ve got a package for me, they tend to just tend to shrug their shoulders at me. Actually, to be fair, it can't be the fault of everyone there, and the woman at the office yesterday did add that things are now so bad she’s not receiving her own pay slips through the post, which is pretty terrible in itself.

What is the meaning of all this?

I’m not happy with you right now, Royal Mail. [info]mock2 wrote a much more eloquent piece about the state of the postal system recently. Mind you, he presumably wasn’t looking like Gregori Rasputin when he wrote it.

[Edit] Noooooo, it gets worse! Because I've worked at *** for more than five years, I'm required to update the details on my ID pass... and Security just called me to their scary basement lair, to stand still for my new passport-type photo. So the beard's going to be immortalised until up to 2014.

In case you’ve not already had this rammed down your face via Facebook, here’s the new short film, which I finished making yesterday.

It’s about two and a half minutes long and suitable for general viewing (although it does contain disturbing footage of me wearing a toga).

Now here's a thing - an 'animal with a human head' which seems to be getting slightly more hits on Youtube than it possibly deserves*.

An interesting idea... Despite it being a tad obvious how they made this, I have to admit it's still pretty damn unpleasant to look at. Almost as interesting (or just plain saddening) are soem of the comments I've read from other Youtubers: "It can't be real, the moderators would have taken it down." "Why would they take it down, because it's real?" etc.

More recently, this video has appeared in response to it, which I think is utter brilliance:

Time for salad.

* I mean, like, by comparison to my movies.

I’ve recently added a new page to my site, dedicated to my recent attempts at music-making. Now, this has been expanded to include the six music videos I have so far made for my tracks.

Watch them here

They are mostly live action, although there’s a smattering of animation, integrated in some places. I’d eventually like to do an entirely animated video for my own music, but first things first…

Now that's magic [Sep. 10th, 2009|10:27 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |work]

Oh dear, another week's slipped by and I've not written about my wunderbar life. This won't do.

My recent news is:

Last weekend
I didn't do a lot, really. Not as much as I'd planned on doing, anyway, due mainly to persistent colds and the monthly budget being horribly over-optimistic about what I could afford. I instead spent most of my time indoors, working on my projects... Lande and I did find time to walk around the park a bit, though, and we made a spur of the moment dash to watch District 9 at the cinema, which is a fantastic film that I can't recommend enough.

My website
One of the afforementioned projects has been setting up an account on Blogspot, where I can post exclusively about new additions to my website. This is so that:
1) people with Blogspot accounts can add me as a friend and follow me that way, and
2) I can now have an RSS feed. I think, anyway. I've not really had a chance to test it yet...

My music
After whittering on for months about my musical projects, I've finally put up a myspace page for what I've been making. These tracks are all ones which I either created for use in a cartoon/film and then didn't use, or ones which have yet to be used for anything much, and have just been littering my hard drive. Hopefully, the project will expand and develop, in time.

Whatever
The main topic of conversation at work today is how Derrin Brown seemingly predicted five numbers from last night's lottery draw. I don't believe for a moment that he possibly could have predicted the numbers, but I'm very curious to know how he pulled off this illusion. Since his 'prediction' was only revealed to us after the lottery draw, I can only assume it didn't exist until a few seconds before he turned that stand around to face the camera... but how did he get those numbers onto the ping-pong balls?

I did notice he looked very excited and fidgety throughout most of the performance, but stood almost perfectly still while the lottery draw was taking place, with one hand concealed behind that card. I'm guessing whatever sleight of hand occurred, it must have been around this point... maybe the card concealed a load of adhesive numbers, and he was discretely chosing the right ones as they were announced on BBC1, then discretely pressed them onto the ping-pong balls? This has given me a restless night, as I'm sure you can tell. Oh well, I'll know for sure when I tune in again tomorrow.

My long weekend [Sep. 1st, 2009|11:09 am]

[Current Mood | sleepy]

Friday
I called my mother, to check on how things were going south of the river, and apparently things south of the river could be better, as her credit and debit cards got stolen earlier in the week, and they lost a fair bit of money from the joint account before anybody noticed the cards were missing. There has been a lot of hassle with the bank trying to get the money recovered and getting the cards replaced – I think some of this is still ongoing now. So the family’s not too happy. I arranged to meet them later in the weekend, to lend some moral support.

As for myself; I managed to come down with a cold, and felt awful anyway after a few late nights working on my projects at home, so I finished work, went for one drink with people from the office, then went home and crashed into bed ridiculously early.

Saturday
I got up feeling a bit more refreshed, did a bit of work updating the website, then rushed out with Lande to meet Robyn in Piccadilly, so that we could go and see the Waterhouse exhibition. I’d been intending to see this for weeks and, I have to say, it was well worth going. It was a bit smaller than I’d expected (four rooms) but all my favourites were there, plus several I’d never even heard of. It was fantastic! Afterwards, we headed to Southwark and met [info]paul_sticks, Lily and other Vagabonds staff for an early evening drink, before everything for the club got set up and the night began properly at the Barrowboy & Banker. Good fun, and we were joined by [info]enlyyl, [info]fireblade__, [info]fatenoir and others later in the night also, but I probably shouldn’t have drunk as much as I did, especially with the cold and everything. I paid the inevitable price for this later on.

Sunday
Badly hung over, I went to London Bridge with Lande to meet my parents. Not only had they suffered the loss of their cards, but on Friday night their car had also been broken into. The thieves broke a window and made off with two cheap folding chairs and a picnic blanket from the boot. I’ve got to wonder why exactly, but the criminal mind must be a very strange and complex thing. But having to get a car window replaced only adds insult to the existing injury, and we found (after a long, meandering walk) an Indian restaurant for a consolatory meal, near Brick Lane. It was great food, but I might have enjoyed it slightly more if I’d gone easier on the drink the night before…

After the meal, we wandered around E1, which is surprisingly good on a warm Sunday afternoon. The thirty degree heat which had been forecast (fortunately) didn’t happen, and we decided not to get sucked into all the Notting Hill Carnival goings on, but East London seemed quite fun, so we stayed there. There were a lot of fairly unofficial-looking street markets going on, and grungy but friendly-looking bars open onto the streets with rambling eccentric types puffing funny roll-ups and jamming together on knackered-looking instruments. I’d never really explored that neck of the woods much, but I think I’ll try and find some more time for it before winter draws in – it’s like a less tarted-up Camden, and also reminds me of the neighbourhood in Berlin where I once lived.

Monday
We watched The Time Traveller’s Wife, which wasn’t my normal sort of thing, but it turned out to be enjoyable nonetheless. Then we had Turkish food. In the evening, I spent a few hours working on my various musical compositions. I’m slowly but surely getting the hang of Fruity Loops and its many plug-ins.

Next Weekend
It’s Inferno on Friday, followed by the Dark Mills thingy on Saturday. Should be fun, provided I get over the cold before then!

[Current Mood | busy]

Apart from making musical/video-y things lately, I've... hmm, what else have I done? Not that much, I suppose, except for spending too much time at the office and sleeping badly.

We did go to a night called The Sunday Séance in Aldwych last weekend, which was a bizarre but fun event, with absinthe, snuff, tarot readings and slightly squeamish magic trickery. I did also drop in on Mike S, Janina and Charlotte a few days ago too, which is always a good thing. But anyway, we're coming to the end of what's been a very shitty month, work and money-wise, and I'm really hoping September will be better.

This bank holiday weekend, our plans are still a bit vague. Hopefully there will be a visit (finally!) to the Royal Academy tomorrow, to go and look at the JW Waterhouse exhibition before it finishes. After that, I'm expecting to drop into the Barrowboy & Banker to annoy [info]paul_sticks for a bit, while he's setting things up for Vagabonds, hang out there until the wee hours. And probably make up Sunday and Monday as we go, depending on what the budget/house chores allow.

I'm all set to go back to work tomorrow. The Tamiflu's all been taken, and I'm now free of most symptoms, although I'm still not bursting with energy and my appetite's not entirely returned. I'd guess I've lost around four or five pounds. But yeah, there's no reason I can see not to be back in the office.

It's been a productive week though, if nothing else... I thought that, if I'm going to spend six days not leaving the flat, I may as well crack on with all my personal projects, and I've made some great progress. Aside from the cartoon, I updated the Newsquelch page yesterday, archived old work to clear a shitload of free space on my hard drive, updated some software, worked on my musical pursuits, spent some 'family time' with the cat, dyed my hair, watched a couple of old movies I'd never got round to seeing... and Lande still hasn't caught the virus! I wish I had an immune system like that.

Having finally started to venture outside again now, I was startled to see someone's dumped a broken old rickshaw outside our back door. What is the meaning of this?? I've never seen one of those driving anywhere near Haringey before, so how did it end up by our building? The council's now aware, so hopefully it'll be gone in a week or so. Oh, dear outside world, how I've missed your weirdness!

[Current Music |Skinny Puppy - Inquisition | Powered by Last.fm]

I don't want to jinx things, but I'm mostly over it now. Despite a good start to Wednesday (causing me to, foolishly, email work and say I might be back in before the end of this week) I think that was actually the worst day of my flu-ness. I ended up spending half that day in bed, with bad sinus pain and a badly upset stomach. Since then, I've been steadily improving and, provided I have a restful weekend, I expect I'll be back in the office on Monday morning...

It's hard to say whether the Tamiflu's helped, or just been a placebo through all this. My appetite's not fully returned yet (I must have lost some weight from this, by now) and I still feel uncomfortably hot, but it's now difficult to tell what's fever and what's actual summer heat. As of yesterday, work's been emailing me stuff to do from home, which will hopefully relieve the shitload I have to look forward to next week, when I go back. And, as you've probably seen by now, I've also used my time off to finish my animation project and launch Whine Meal 2, which is a huge weight off my mind.

So yeah, no Inferno for me tonight. I could do with saving the money, anyway. Normal business resumes shortly.

Nose blocked, sinuses painful, temperature bouncing up and down (apparently at random), dehydrated, very lethargic. Haven't switched television on today, so far. Can't bear the thought of more programmes about people buying houses, selling houses, building houses and renovating houses. Those fucking programmes.

I'm still not 100% sure what I've got, but if it's not swine flu, it's definitely something nasty enough to warrant staying out of the office. I offered to do something from home, if they have anything I can do, but so far they've not taken me up on the offer. I got some work done on my animation yesterday, but so far today, I've been losing the battle to motivate myself.

NHS Direct allocated me a code number yesterday to pick up some antiviral stuff (presumably the Tamiflu which keeps getting mentioned in the media), but it also told me to stay indoors and ask someone else to pick it up for me, so I had to ask Lande - who so far is not showing any symptoms - to go and get it from the pharmacy. Except she couldn't, because she needs ID in my name to bring with her - something the NHS website failed to mention - and I don't currently have a valid passport. I was half way through renewing my passport when this struck and, ironically, the new one was delivered by courier to my work address yesterday morning! We'll have to try again today, with my old document which has one corner cut off, and hope the pharmacist takes pity on me...

[Current Music |Nightwish - "The Poet and the Pendulum"]

On Friday evening, Lande and I went to Deviant at the Purple Turtle. It was pretty good fun, but we left halfway through the live set by Cybercide, as we were both feeling really tired and I still hadn't got over my cold from earlier in the week.

On Saturday, we ventured down into Croydon. This was mainly to be at a big family gathering, for my parents' fortieth wedding anniversary (they tied the knot in 1969, just after Apollo 11 landed on the moon) and also for my grandmother's eighty-first birthday. En route though, we stopped at Time Bomb on Northend. I always call into that place when I pass it, just on principle because it's nice to see an alternative clothing shop in Croydon, but rarely seem to actually buy anything (which always makes me feel guilty because they're so friendly). Anyway, they print T-shirts there and I'd wanted to get a Brass Eye-related design for ages so, when I was off work last Tuesday, I managed to draw this out using Photoshop and put it on a USB stick for printing:

I'm pleased with how this turned out! Anyway, from there we continued to my family homestead (not wearing the T-shirt) and seven of the Gardner clan all ended up going for a curry at Zara's Kitchen. In an attempt to unblock my sinuses, I ordered a vegetable madras, which turned out to be so strong I did struggle with it a bit, but it was ultimately rewarding; they never disappoint there!

On Sunday, I managed to raid a few old photos from the albums on my old bedroom shelf, and my parents took me and Lande - as a bit of a random daytrip - over to look at a lavender farm near Carshalton. I did a bit of photography over there (I'm hoping it will make a handy location for a future film project), then we headed back home to north London. No time for the Alternative Bring & Buy sale unfortunately, but I was starting to feel very run-down by this point and wanted to go to bed early.

Today... the NHS Direct website can't confirm this for definite, but it looks like I may have swine flu. I've got an authorisation code to go and collect antiviral meds anyway, and have been advised to stay away from work. So here I am. I hope this doesn't last for too long, I can't honestly say I'm enjoying the illness that much so far.

Dingwalls and Brompton Cemetery [Jul. 21st, 2009|11:06 am]

[Current Mood | busy]

The Birthday Massacre gig was great fun at Dingwall’s on Thursday – just a pity it was on a weeknight! I’d seen them once before, in Whitby, but this time I had a much better view of the stage. Adoration were great as first support band, despite some issues with the sound mix… wasn’t quite so into the band who came on after them, but some of the crowd seemed to enjoy them (maybe I’m showing my age). The Birthday Massacre played all my favourites - it's just a pity it was raining so heavily when the show ended, and everybody went home looking like drowned rats.

Another weekend, another cemetery open day… another very beautiful place to explore, this time with some owl-related fun thrown in too!

Photos… )

After the cemetery, there was a predictable trip to the pub down the Fulham Road, followed by some wonderful Thai food at the Blue Elephant.

My creative projects continue to plod onwards. Mike S and I are doing a three-part series of ‘historical’ essays on World War 2. Cartoon still isn't finished. Would still really like to have some more free time!

Howard's front [Jul. 13th, 2009|10:43 am]

[Current Location |work]
[Current Mood | tired]

On Friday evening I managed to wangle my way out of work half an hour early, and caught the train down to Coulsdon, where I hooked up with Mike S and Janina for the first time in ages and ages. They’ve not changed at all, although Charlotte is now almost two years old and has, unsurprisingly, got a lot bigger, more vocal and more mobile since I last visited. She seemed quite intrigued by all the funny faces I was pulling, due mainly to my lower back pain. After she’d been put to bed, I stayed up with Mike and Janina watching television in their flat, drinking wine and talking about the old days in Berlin and silly film projects we could make*.

I crashed on their spare bed, and woke to find that, despite feeling a bit worse for wear because of the wine, my back was starting to improve. I called over at my parents’ place for lunch, and had a bit of a catch-up with them too, mostly concerning our recent holidays. In the evening, after returning to Wood Green, I’d thought about going out to Slimelight, but didn’t really fancy taking the risk with my achy back, so I stayed in the flat with Coco – Lande is still away in Cornwall until tomorrow, visiting her family – and did a bit of work on my cartoon instead. I’d grabbed a few old audio cassettes from my old bedroom at my parents’ place, along with an early nineties tape walkman (which still works surprisingly well) so I fiddled around with those for a while too, tangling myself and the cat in cables, and managed to convert some long-lost music of my youth into MP3 files.

Yesterday, whatever had caused my back pain finally seemed to have gone away, so I met up with [info]sheridanwilde and Sonja in Camden, and we made our ways to Twickenham for the Cure Picnic. This year’s was another good one, although the weather kept alternating between bright sunshine and heavy downpour, which perhaps caused the turn-out to be slightly down on previous years. [info]fireblade__ and Dawn made it to the picnic for the first time though, and we all ran for cover of the nearest pub whenever rain threatened, so all-in-all it was worth it.

So yeah, that brings me up to this morning. A combination of spinal aches, small children, annoying whiney cats and new country & western-loving neighbours has deprived me of some of the sleep I should have had over the weekend, so I ought to try and get to bed early tonight, or I'll look like a wreck by the time Lande returns home. It's been worth it, though.

* One of these ideas, titled The World’s Wildest Venetian Police Chases, might see the light of day later this year, if I could just find enough time to actually edit it at home.

There's a big question mark hanging over my plans for the weekend right now. If the "HOLLYWOOD" sign above Los Angeles had a question mark at the end, and it were suspended on big wires, then that would be roughly the size of the one hanging over my plans.

Yesterday, I had a strangely uncomfortable feeling in my coccyx and/or lower back muscles. Today it's got a lot worse, with occasional shooting pains when I move. I have no idea what might be causing this and nothing feels like it's broken or out of place - trapped nerve, maybe? - but I'd really like it to stop.

I might still come out and do fun stuff around London tomorrow/Sunday, but only if this pain goes away.

The Middle of the Year Show [Jun. 30th, 2009|12:48 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |work]
[Current Mood | tired]

Incredible! In just 184 days, one of the greatest decades in human history will end and we will all be refugees*.

I'd made so many plans for 2009 and I'm in a state of panic, now that it's nearly half over and there's so much still to be done. I can mostly blame this year's lack of progress on having so many short trips away to places, and the day-job expanding to claim all the free time these excursions didn't want. Well, the travelling's over, at least for now, and I'll just have to wait patiently for the inbox on my desk to receed.

My musical ambitions have been stagnating for the last couple of months, but I'll find a way to rescue them eventually. Whine Meal 2 is running way behind its original schedule, but I'm still cheerfully confident it will be finished one day. And, damn, my website is a whole year old tomorrow, and I've not even bought it a card.

The heatwave... everybody's moaning about that right now, so I might as well too. The London Underground is a sauna, full of grumbling, shuffling people with suits and body odour, and where the steam is seasoned by airborne iron filings and skin flakes. Among these shuffling people, you can clearly see which ones don't have aircon at home (myself included) because they've not slept since last week. This is most enjoyable.

This weekend, I foresee Inferno on Friday and the Kensal Green Cemetary Open Day thingy on Saturday. Lande and I will also be saying goodbye to [info]maznige, who's been lodging with us for the last few weeks; she's heading off to a place of her own within the metropolis.

The weekend beyond that, it's the annual Cure Picnic in Twickenham. And then it's 2010, pretty much. Insane!

* Don't write-in about that. It's a throwaway comment and paraphrased, badly, from Withnail & I

Back from Budapest [Jun. 26th, 2009|11:38 am]

[Current Location |work]
[Current Mood | tired]

I have, unfortunately, had to return straight to work, with only a few hours of sleep, so this will be a hurried update, and maybe a bit of a shambles, but I’ll try and post another one later with photos and stuff.

  • Depeche Mode were great. Needless to say, they’re huge in eastern Europe and the atmosphere was terrific. Unfortunately, it was in an open-air athletics stadium and, two songs into the set, the heavens opened, and Paul S and I left the gig looking like we’d been swimming in the Danube. I didn’t care though… it was a warm evening and I’d been on the Jaegermeister since lunch time.
  • There was a DM Afterparty at one of Budapest’s night clubs, which we also went to. I even did karaoke there, much to my shame - normally, you wouldn’t get me anywhere near that, but I was a bit too trashed to care by that time, and I reasoned that at least I wouldn’t be able to understand the heckles I received. Had a bit of a dance. The Hungarian goth/DM/electronica/eighties crowd seem friendly.
  • We had some excellent food at the Lukács Cukrászda cafe.
  • As an unexpected bonus, after hooking up with my other friends in Buda, I also got to watch a second gig; Prong were playing the night after DM, at a grungy alternative bar. I used to listen to Prong as a teenager (they were the first band I’d ever heard the word ‘industrial’ applied to, although they now seem to playing as a straightforward metal act) so we all went along to check them out for old times sake. It was great to hear some of their old songs... I must dig out that album when I get back home!
  • We explored the newly opened military hospital/nuclear bunker museum, built in caves within the Buda Hills. Morbidly interesting stuff. They were selling lots of antique medical instruments, which I’d love to own, but probably wouldn’t have been allowed to carry in my luggage.
  • I arrived back in London early this morning, after our flight to Gatwick was delayed by mechanical problems. Slightly surprised upon landing, to hear that Michael Jackson’s dead - a kind of wave of hysteria spread through the plane, as people started to switch their phones/blackberries back on after landing and saw the headlines. Then we learned Farah Fawcett was gone too, to which a few people made grunts and ‘meh’ sounds. I crashed at my parent’s place, as it was far too late to contemplate getting to Wood Green.

I’ll try and catch up with other people’s lives shortly, when I finish clearing out all my work emails. Tonight I’m looking forward to getting back to the flat and seeing Lande, [info]maznige and Coco again. Then I'll try and survive a few hours at Antichrist without falling asleep under a table (probably a very unwise place to sleep) and also Vagabonds tomorrow.

Then I look forward to a very peaceful, quiet, cheap July!

I don't watch a lot of TV normally, and when I do, I often get so bored of the toss on my screens that I end up paying more attention to the commercials. And there's been a huge shift recently in how things are advertised; a trend for nostalgia, where it seems like more than half of all advertising now is twenty or more years old.

I think Hovis started it, late last year, with that (admittedly quite good) one of the boy running through a century of UK history. Then Virgin Atlantic had a go, as did Sainsbury's and M&S, in two surprisingly identical-looking campaigns. The 118 people had been dabbling in eighties theme songs for a while now, but this year the media's resurgent obsession with The A Team hit a new low. But not long afterwards, somebody - I think it was NPower first - realised there's no need to shoot all those expensive-looking period scenes, or yank has-been actors out of the Hollywood gutter, when you can just raid the archives and re-edit old material*. And suddenly the shite-gates were open and everybody was doing it; Fairy, Milky Bar and dozens of others.

Earlier today, I spotted this one rear its head again, for the first time in twenty years:

Well, the one I saw today was almost the same as this one. I did spot one critical adjustment for twenty-first century audiences, which was that it no longer says "the sweet you can eat between meals without ruining your appetite" - surely that was the whole point they were trying to convey? The anti-obesity lobby has now CGI'd it out and put in some banal message about "lightening up".

Your guess is as good as mine why all this is happening... but my guess is firmly on the recession. People need reassurance right now, in these uncertain times, so why not give all the grown-ups what they want and allow them to suck their thumbs and pretend they're re-living their childhoods, where everything was okay? I discussed this with Mike S during the week, and he suggested a campaign of Hovis-style feel-good ads, celebrating how British Leyland are as good today as they've ever been. How cool would that be?
